In 1988, the Janata Party merged with other smaller parties to create the Janata Dal . In 1996, H. D. Deve Gowda, a prominent leader, became the Prime Minister of India, heading the United Front (UF) coalition government ;1999, the Janata Dal split into factions. The JD(S) was formed under H. D. Deve Gowda’s leadership, while another faction merged to become the Janata Dal.On April 14, 2015, the JD(S) joined forces with other parties, including the Janata Dal (United), to form the Janata Parivar alliance. The goal was to oppose the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), leading to their departure from the United Progressive Alliance (UPA ) .
