जनता दल (यूनाइटेड) का बिहार की राजनीति में पिछले कुछ सालों से अच्‍छा-खासा दबदबा रहा है. 30 अक्‍टूबर, 2003 में इसके गठन के 2 साल बाद 2005 से ही बिहार में अबतक इस पार्टी की सत्ता रही है. नीतीश कुमार की अगुवाई में करीब 12 साल से (जीतनराम मांझी के कार्यकाल को छोड़ दें तो) प्रदेश के मुख्‍यमंत्री रहे हैं. यह पार्टी जनता दल,  लोकशक्ति पार्टी और समता पार्टी से को मिलकर बनाई गई है.

शरद यादव की अगुवाई वाली जनता दल, जॉर्ज फर्नांडीस और नीतीश कुमार की समता पार्टी तथा लोकशक्ति पार्टी के विलय से जनता दल (यूनाइटेड) का जन्‍म हुआ. भाजपा से गठबंधन कर जदयू ने बिहार की राजनीति में खुद को मजबूत करना शुरू किया और 2005 में भाजपा-जदयू गठबंधन ने मिलकर विधानसभा चुनाव में लगभग 15 साल से काबिज राजद को शिकस्‍त देकर सत्‍ता से बेदखल किया. इस तरह नीतीश कुमार के प्रभावी भूमिका के कारण उन्हें प्रदेश का मुख्‍यमंत्री बनाया गया. फिलहाल बिहार में लगातार तीसरी बार भी जनता दल (यूनाइटेड) की ही सरकार है. साथ ही यह धीरे-धीरे खुद को दूसरे राज्यों में भी विस्तार कर रही है. 2017 में ही दिल्ली में होने वाले एमसीडी चुनाव में यह पार्टी अपना पूरा जोर लगा रही है.
